Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 2: Chris Young homered and drove in three runs to back Trevor Cahill’s strong pitching as visiting Arizona averted a three-game sweep.
Young hit a two-run blast in the first and added a run-scoring single in the third as the Diamondbacks bounced back from consecutive one-run losses to the Rockies.
Cahill (1-0) gave up one run and four hits in 7 1/3 innings to record his first victory since joining Arizona. The 24-year-old, who was acquired from the Oakland Athletics after winning 40 games over three seasons, struck out six and walked two and only allowed one runner past first base. Arizona outfielders didn’t have a single putout during his stint as he got 13 outs on grounders.
Aaron Hill delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded in the fifth to make it 5-0.
Jonathan Herrera had three hits against Cahill and he scored Colorado’s first run on Tyler Colvin’s bases-loaded fielder’s choice in the eighth. A second run scored on Troy Tulowitzki’s infield single and Colorado again loaded the bases before Bryan Shaw – the fourth reliever of the inning – retired Ramon Hernandez on an infield tapper.
Shaw worked a perfect ninth for his second save.
Drew Pomeranz (0-1) allowed five runs and nine hits in four innings in his first start of the campaign.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona has scored in the first inning in seven of nine games … The Rockies didn’t have a runner reach second base until the eighth inning … The Diamondbacks stole four bases, two by Gerardo Parra … Colorado first baseman Todd Helton was given the day off after delivering a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday.
