Michael Morse belted a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth inning as the Washington Nationals continued their bid for a winning season with a 6-4 victory over the Florida Marlins on Monday.
Prior to the contest, Florida manager Jack McKeon, 80, announced he will not be returning next season. Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was released from his contract on Monday night and will reportedly be traded to the Marlins for a pair of minor leaguers.
With two runners aboard in the ninth, Morse deposited an offering from Edward Mujica (9-6) into the seats in left field for his 30th homer of the season and second in as many games.
Rick Ankiel drove in a pair of runs and Ian Desmond had an RBI double and scored three times for Washington (79-80), which needs to win its final two games to finish above .500 for the first time since the franchise moved from Montreal before the 2005 season. The Nationals have one game which was rained out and will not be made up.
Making his sixth appearance, Atahualpa Severino (1-0) struck out two in one inning to pick up his first career victory. Henry Rodriguez worked the ninth to secure his second career save.
