North Carolina 70, Virginia 52: Tyler Zeller scored 25 points to help No. 5 North Carolina rebound from a crushing loss to Duke with a much-needed marquee win over visiting No. 20 Virginia.

The Tar Heels (21-4, 8-2 ACC) appeared a bit hungover from a massive collapse against Duke on Wednesday but dominated the glass and pushed the pace in the second half to claim its first victory over a ranked opponent since beating No. 7 Wisconsin in November. Both Harrison Barnes and John Henson recorded double-doubles, while Zeller grabbed nine rebounds himself against an undersized front line for Virginia (19-5, 6-4 ACC), which ran out of gas with a thin six-man rotation.

The Cavaliers’ second-ranked scoring defense held the Tar Heels in check for most of the first half until a 13-3 run pushed the home team ahead at the break. A Virginia scoring drought, where it made just one field goal in more than a nine-minute stretch in the second half and allowed North Carolina to turn a three-point deficit into a 12-point advantage with 7:44 left.

Mike Scott had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Cavaliers.

GAME NOTEBOOK: North Carolina went 1 for 10 from 3-point range, matching a season-low for the second straight game … UNC outrebounded Virginia 46-31 … A contrast of styles, the Tar Heels took 11 more shots than the Cavs in the second half.
