Kawhi Leonard had 23 points and 14 rebounds and No. 7 San Diego State held off upset-minded San Francisco 62-56 at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic on Tuesday.

The Aztecs (13-0), who are ranked in the Top 10 for the first time in school history, trailed 49-48 with 5:33 remaining after San Francisco’s Angelo Caloiaro hit one of his four 3-pointers.

San Diego State answered with a 9-2 run, but the Dons refused to go away, and cut the Aztecs’ lead to 57-55 on a 3-point play with 31 seconds left. D.J. Gay (14 points) made four free throws to secure the win.

Michael Williams scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the first half, which ended 31-31. Caloiaro and Perris Blackwell each finished with 14 points for San Francisco (4-7).

It was the second unexpected close call for the Aztecs in two weeks as Cal Poly gave San Diego State a scare Dec. 13 before losing 51-45. The Aztecs hold the second longest active winning streak in the nation behind Duke’s 21.

San Diego State struggled from 3-point range against the Dons as they shot 5 for 19 (26.3 percent). The Aztecs were also outrebounded 22-18.

Malcolm Thomas and Billy White scored 10 points each for the Aztecs, who play Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis for the second time this season on Wednesday in Las Vegas. The Aztecs beat IUPUI 61-46 on Nov. 21 in Oxford, Ohio.
