Matt Davidson singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 11th inning as the Chicago White Sox defeated the host Cleveland Indians 5-4 Thursday night at Progressive Field.

The White Sox avoided not only a sweep of the three-game series, but also a sweep of the games between the teams played at Progressive Field this season. The White Sox finished 1-8 in Cleveland.

White Sox left-hander Hector Santiago (6-3) pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the victory. Indians right-hander Adam Cimber (3-8) took the loss.

Yolmer Sanchez led off the 11th with a double to left field and moved to third on a groundout. After an intentional walk and a strikeout, Davidson grounded a single into right field to score Sanchez.

The Indians, who rallied from a 4-0 deficit to eventually tie the score in the bottom of the eighth, nearly won it in the 10th. With two outs and runners at first and second, Jason Kipnis hit a ball that appeared headed for right field. But the ball struck runner Brandon Barnes, ending the inning.

White Sox right-hander James Shields, who was bidding to win consecutive road starts for the first time since 2015, left after six innings with a 4-2 lead. He allowed two runs -- on back-to-back homers by Francisco Lindor and Michael Brantley leading off the third -- on five hits with three walks and one strikeout.

The Indians tied it in the eighth off four White Sox relievers.

Lindor led off with a triple to center field off left-hander Aaron Bummer and scored on a wild pitch. Brantley then lined a single to left before Jose Ramirez struck out on a 3-2 pitch.

Right-hander Rob Scahill entered to face Edwin Encarnacion. Brantley proceeded to steal second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Encarnacion walked, left-hander Caleb Frare walked pinch-hitter Josh Donaldson to load the bases.

Right-hander Juan Minaya struck out Yandy Diaz before Melky Cabrera fouled off four two-strike pitches before walking on a full count to bring home the tying run. Kipnis, who hit a walk-off grand slam the previous night for his 1,000th career hit, popped out to shortstop to end the inning.

Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin allowed four runs on eight hits in four innings. He didn't issue a walk and struck out two.

The White Sox scored in each of the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead, capped by Omar Narvaez's solo homer in the third.
