SAN FRANCISCO -- On a night when the San Francisco Giants could have been celebrating Madison Bumgarner's first win of the season, instead they mourned a loss.

It's been that kind of season.

Shortly after completing a trade that sent third baseman Eduardo Nunez to the Boston Red Sox, the Giants finished off an 11-3 thumping of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Bumgarner went five innings to end his season-long drought. Joe Panik highlighted a 14-hit San Francisco attack with a bases-clearing triple in a four-run third inning, capping a game in which Nunez was dealt midway through.

"He's going to a very good ballclub with a chance to make the postseason, so I'm happy for him. He's going to help them," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Nunez, who was dealt for 22-year-old Class A right-hander Shaun Anderson and 17-year-old righty Gregory Santos of the rookie-level Dominican Summer League.

"He's very talented," Bochy continued about Nunez. "That's why a lot of clubs wanted him. I'm going to miss him. He gave me a lot of options."

Nunez left the game in the fifth inning, having contributed a two-run double and two runs to the win. He finished the Giants portion of his season hitting .308.

"It's exciting to go for a championship," he said afterward. "I really enjoyed the team here."

Buster Posey had three hits and scored twice for the Giants, who had given Bumgarner (1-4) a total of 10 runs of offensive support in his previous six starts this season.

The left-hander limited the Pirates to one run and six hits. He walked one and struck out four.

"It's nice to be on the board individually," said Bumgarner, who hadn't won since his final start of the 2016 season against the Los Angeles Dodgers. "But that's not what it's about. It's about the team winning. That's why we're all here."

The victory was the first for a Giants starting pitcher since left-hander Ty Blach beat the Detroit Tigers on July 5.

Right-hander Chris Stratton, called up earlier in the day from Triple-A Sacramento, replaced Bumgarner and pitched the final four innings to record his first save. He allowed two runs on six hits.

The Giants bombed Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon (6-4) for four-run bursts in the third and fourth innings to take a 10-0 lead.

"I didn't make good pitches once they got runners on," Taillon said. "It's my job to limit the damage. They didn't waste any time. They had a merry-go-round going."

Denard Span, Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford and Hunter Pence had two hits apiece for the Giants, who won for only the fifth time in their last 16 games.

Josh Harrison, David Freese, Jose Osuna and Adam Frazier collected two hits each for the Pirates, who had won seven straight at AT&T Park.

The Giants outhit the Pirates 14-12.

Nunez was seen saying goodbye to teammates in the dugout with San Francisco batting in the fifth. He left for a pinch hitter at that point.

Earlier, Panik's game-breaking triple came after the Giants took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with the help of a throwing error by Pirates first baseman Josh Bell.

Posey's second hit, an RBI double, made it 3-0 and helped set the stage for Panik. The Pirates elected to intentionally walk Crawford to load the bases, after which Taillon got a second out by getting Hunter Pence to pop up.

Panik then lined a shot to right-center that got between the Pittsburgh outfielders, clearing the bases and making it a four-run inning and a 6-0 game.

"I was one quality pitch away," Taillon said. "I didn't make it, and he got the big hit."

Nunez's double was the big hit of the Giants' four-run third that increased the lead to 10-0 and ended Taillon's night.

Taillon allowed a career-worst 10 runs (nine earned) and nine hits in three-plus innings. He walked one and struck out one.

NOTES: RHP Shaun Anderson, Boston's third-round pick in 2016, was 6-3 with a 3.42 ERA at two Class A stops this season. RHP Gregory Santos, signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2015, was 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in the rookie-level Dominican Summer League. ... Pirates RHP Jameson Taillon lost for the first time in his career against a National League West team. He had been 2-0 in his previous four starts against the division. ... Before the game, the Giants promoted RHP Chris Stratton from Triple-A and demoted INF/OF Orlando Calixte. ... The game was played on the 61st anniversary of Pirates RF Roberto Clemente's walk-off, inside-the-park grand slam -- the only one in major league history -- against the Chicago Cubs.
