MILWAUKEE -- Of the 41 players used Sunday afternoon when the Milwaukee Brewers hosted the Arizona Diamondbacks, nobody wanted the game to end more than Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado, who had already caught 17 innings when he strode to the plate for his final at-bat.

He needed just one pitch to make sure there wasn't an 18th frame, smacking a solo home run to center that gave the Brewers a 7-6 victory; avoiding their second consecutive series sweep and snapping a seven-game losing streak.

"I was really, really tired out there and I was happy to win the game like that," said Maldonado, who finished with four hits including a pair of doubles and also drew two walks.

And after catching 17 innings, he will likely return to a bench role Monday when catcher Jonathan Lucroy is activated from the disabled list.

"He'll get a day off tomorrow," Counsell said.

Milwaukee trailed 5-1 at one point thanks to a shaky start from right-hander Tyler Wagner, who was making his Double-A Biloxi.

Wagner allowed a first inning home run to Arizona Paul Goldschmidt then fell behind 4-0 when the Diamondbacks added three more in the second.

Milwaukee finally got on the board in the third, scoring on doubles by Maldonado and shortstop Jean Segura, but Goldschmidt made it a 5-1 game with an RBI single in the fourth.

Goldschmidt finished the day with three hits, all of them off Wagner, and also drew four walks — three of them intentional — to tie a franchise record by reaching base seven times in a game.

"We talked about it before the game," Counsell said. "He (Goldschmidt) just in a place right now where you're avoiding him. If anybody is on base, you're avoiding him, and you've got to take your chance to try to get the next guy."

The Brewers' offense kept chipping away at right-hander Chase Anderson and finally pulled ahead in the sixth on an RBI double by center fielder Carlos Gomez.

It didn't last long, though, as right-hander Jeremy Jeffress gave up a home run to right fielder Mark Trumbo in the eighth, knotting the game at 6.

And that's where things would stay for the next nine innings, as neither team could capitalize with runners in scoring position.

Arizona left fielder Ender Inciarte took over in the first after David Peralta injured his finger on a bunt attempt and with Milwaukee pitching around Goldschmidt, had chances to drive in the go-ahead run in his final four at-bats but came up empty every time.

"Ender had a couple of shots and just couldn't get it done today," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. "I had complete confidence that he would do it, every time that he would get a hit."

Despite carrying eight relievers on the roster, Milwaukee had to turn to right-hander Matt Garza (3-7), the scheduled starter Monday in St. Louis, to close things out, and he put forth perhaps his best effort of the season, scattering three hits over five scoreless innings to pick up his first victory since April 29.

"I've done it before," Garza said. "I came out as a starter/closer from college. There's no different mindset. You have to attack either way. You don't ever save bullets. You just go.

"I got back to being me. It was nice. It felt good. Win or lose, the way I felt out there, I was pumped."

Left-hander Vidal Nuno (0-1) took the loss for the Diamondbacks and covered the final 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six, including second baseman Luis Sardinas to open the 17th, but missed his mark on an 88-mph fastball to Maldonado.

"Nuno did a wonderful job of battling," Hale said. "We just couldn't come through with the key hit with two outs."
