Giants 3, Padres 1: Brandon Crawford delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning as San Francisco prevailed against visiting San Diego.

Andrew Susac walked to load the bases and pinch hitter Pablo Sandoval struck out before Crawford roped a single to right field off Dale Thayer (4-5) that plated Matt Duffy and Brandon Belt. Hunter Strickland (1-0) worked a perfect eighth inning for his first career win and Santiago Casilla retired the Padres in order in the ninth for his 19th save.

The Giants got on the board in the first as Duffy reached on an infield single and scored on Belt’s double off Eric Stults, who tossed seven innings of one-run ball. Belt is 5-for-10 in the first three games of the series for the Giants, who have won 12 of their last 15 home contests.

San Diego pulled even in the fifth as Will Venable ripped a leadoff single off Jake Peavy, moved to third on Cory Spangenberg’s double and scored on Yasmani Grandal’s sacrifice fly. Peavy limited his former team to one run over five innings and lowered his ERA to 1.35 over his last nine starts.

San Francisco, which clinched the second National League wild card Friday, rested many of its regulars and saw rookies Gary Brown and Duffy record two hits apiece. Spangenberg and Seth Smith had two hits apiece for San Diego, which was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants RF Hunter Pence was held out of the starting lineup for the first time in 331 games, but extended his consecutive games played streak to 382 when he flied out as a pinch hitter in the seventh. … Stults had a 5.22 ERA in his first 22 starts this season before posting a 2.74 ERA over his final 11 outings. … Brown recorded his first major-league hit with a bunt single to begin the third inning.
