Royals 6, White Sox 4:
Christian Colon went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored as visiting Kansas City edged Chicago hours after settling for the first American League wild-card spot.

Alcides Escobar, Billy Butler and Norichika Aoki had two hits apiece for the Royals, who pulled many of their starters early in the game after learning that Detroit claimed the AL Central title with a 3-0 win over Minnesota. Kansas City will host Oakland in the wild-card game on Tuesday.

Marcus Semien homered and drove in three runs while Adam Eaton went 3-for-3 with a run scored for Chicago, which lost five of its final six games and finished under .500 for the second straight season. Chris Bassitt scattered five hits and yielded three runs over five frames in his fifth career start for the White Sox.

The Royals led 2-0 before Chicago pulled even in the third on Semien’s two-run blast off Yordano Ventura, who allowed four runs over four innings. Casey Coleman (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless fifth inning and Louis Coleman struck out the side in the ninth for his second career save and first since 2011.

Semien drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to put Chicago ahead 4-2, but the Royals responded with three runs in the sixth as Colon delivered a two-run double and Carlos Peguero added an RBI single off Daniel Webb (6-5).

GAME NOTEBOOK: White Sox 1B Paul Konerko received a standing ovation when he was replaced by Andy Wilkins at the start of the fourth inning. The retiring slugger went 0-for-3 and finished as a career .279 hitter. … Kansas City added an insurance run in the eighth when 2B Johnny Giavotella scored following two consecutive wild pitches by Scott Carroll. … Chicago SS Alexei Ramirez missed the game due to a hamstring injury suffered in Saturday’s contest.
