Pirates 4, Mariners 1:
Garrett Jones homered and Andrew McCutchen had an RBI double among his four hits as host Pittsburgh won the opener of the two-game interleague series.

The Pirates scored twice in the first off Aaron Harang (1-4) when Starling Marte reached base on an infield single and Travis Snider and McCutchen followed with RBI doubles. Harang settled in after the first and left after giving up two runs with six strikeouts over six innings.

Jeanmar Gomez (2-0) allowed two hits over five shutout innings after scheduled starter James McDonald was scratched with right shoulder discomfort. Five Pittsburgh relievers combined to limit the Mariners to one run over the next four innings, with Jason Grilli recording his major-league leading 13th save.

Seattle cut the deficit in half in the seventh when Dustin Ackley scored from second base on Raul Ibanez’s two-out double off Jose Contreras. The Mariners managed just one extra-base hit among their five hits in their first meeting against the Pirates since 2004.

Jones extended the Pirates’ lead with a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth off Carter Capps. Pittsburgh has won 17 of 26 games since starting the season 1-5.
