: Christian Friedrich pitched six strong innings in his major league debut and Wilin Rosario drove in a pair as visiting Colorado avoided a three-game sweep at San Diego.

Chris Nelson added two RBIs and Michael Cuddyer and Jason Giambi each recorded two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Rockies.

Friedrich (1-0) was Colorado’s first-round draft pick in 2008 but has been stuck in the minors due to injuries and command issues. The 24-year-old looked sharp on Wednesday, allowing two runs - one earned - on five hits while issuing one walk and striking out seven.

The left-hander posted a 3.00 ERA in five Triple-A starts this spring and is the Rockies’ latest hope to help stabilize the rotation with Jorge De La Rosa and Jeremy Guthrie out and Jhoulys Chacin back in the minors.

The Padres pushed across single runs in the first and third before Colorado struck back, cutting the deficit in half on Giambi’s RBI double off Anthony Bass in the fourth.

The Rockies broke it open with four unearned runs in the sixth, capitalizing on an error by shortstop Andy Parrino. Carlos Gonzalez followed the miscue with a double and Cuddyer tied it with a sacrifice fly.

Rosario’s two-run double put Colorado on top.

Bass (1-4) was charged with five runs - one earned - on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Padres right-hander Alex Hinshaw made his season debut with 1 1/3 perfect innings. He had not pitched in the majors since he was with the San Francisco Giants in 2009. … The Rockies had totaled three runs in the first two games of the series. … Yonder Alonso and Jesus Guzman each recorded two hits and an RBI for San Diego.
