Vernon Wells homered in his return to Toronto and Ervin Santana went the distance en route to his fifth straight victory as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Blue Jays 5-1 on Friday night.

Wells, who spent his first 12 seasons with the Blue Jays before being dealt to Los Angeles in the off-season, was given a warm ovation as he came to bat in the second inning. He tipped his helmet to the crowd before promptly ripping the first pitch he saw from Brandon Morrow (8-7) over the left center-field wall for his 17th homer of the season.

Santana (9-8) cruised for most of the night, limiting Toronto to seven hits in his fourth complete game of the season. He has allowed only four earned runs over his last five starts, a span of 42 innings.

Eric Thames blasted his sixth homer of the season with one out in the ninth to spoil Santana's shutout bid.

Morrow surrendered four runs on four hits over seven innings while equaling a season high with four walks. The hard-throwing righthander has dropped three of his last four starts.

Erick Aybar's steal in the seventh gave the Angels 100 for the 11th consecutive season, the longest active streak in the majors.

Los Angeles remained two games behind first-place Texas in the American League West.
