The San Francisco Giants are going home and the Texas Rangers aren't going with them - but the World Series trophy is.

Behind eight strong innings from Tim Lincecum and a three-run home run from Edgar Renteria, the Giants beat the Rangers 3-1 in Game 5 on Monday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, finishing off the franchise's first championship since the New York Giants won it all in 1954.

After the way the Giants' young pitching staff dominated throughout the series, it was only fitting that Lincecum (2-0) finished the series with another gem. The two-time Cy Young Award winner allowed only three hits and struck out 10 for his second win of the series.

Rangers left-hander Cliff Lee (0-2) matched Lincecum most of the way, but Cody Ross and Juan Uribe led off the seventh with singles - the first time either team had a runner in scoring position all night - and Renteria followed with a two-out blast to left field to break up the scoreless tie.

Lee allowed three runs on six hits and struck out six over seven innings, dropping his second consecutive start after starting his postseason career with seven straight victories.

In what could be his final season, Renteria ended it the same way he wrapped up his first full season in the majors - with the hit that clinched a World Series title.

He delivered the game-ending single in the bottom of the 11th inning in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series, lifting the Marlins to their first title, and he set off a celebration in San Francisco on Monday. Renteria went 7-for-17 with two home runs and six RBIs in the series.

Nelson Cruz's solo homer in the seventh gave the Rangers' home crowd a glimmer of hope. But Lincecum snuffed it out by striking out David Murphy and Bengie Molina to end the seventh and breezing through the eighth, getting the ball to closer Brian Wilson, who worked a perfect ninth to save his sixth game of the postseason but his first of the series.

The Rangers, who led the majors with a team batting average of .276 in the regular season, hit .190 in the series and scored only 12 runs in the five games.
