SUNRISE, Fla. -- Maybe Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov should renegotiate.
Just a few hours after agreeing to a $35.4 million contract extension, Barkov scored the first of five straight Panthers goals as Florida rolled to a 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night at the BB&T Center.
"(Barkov) is probably worth even more," said defenseman Alex Petrovic, who scored the last of Florida's goals.
The 20-year-old Barkov, who secured a six-year deal, scored his 13th goal of the season, tying the score 1-1 with 16:11 left in the second period.
After a boarding penalty on Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf, Florida defenseman Brian Campbell ignited the Panthers power play, making a sweet pass to free Barkov for a breakaway.
"We were struggling there," Panthers left winger Jussi Jokinen said of Florida's state of mind before Barkov scored. "But (Barkov) has those silky hands."
Said Leafs coach Mike Babcock: "Barkov walked right down the middle, and we didn't do what we were supposed to do. They capitalized."
Center Vincent Trocheck got the game-winning goal – also on the power play - with 7:40 left in the second period. Trocheck, Jokinen and right winger Reilly Smith all had a goal and an assist for Florida. Defenseman Brian Campbell added two assists.
Jokinen, who like Barkov is from Finland, said "everyone in the room is happy" for their newly rich teammate.
"We appreciate how he plays – he deserves that contract," Jokinen said. "I don't think he's going to change how he plays or how he behaves. He's going to be a great leader for this team for the next decade, 15 years."
Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo earned career win No. 423 and also got an assist on Florida's first goal. Luongo, who made 22 saves, tied Tony Esposito for seventh place in NHL history for wins by a goalie.
Florida (29-15-5), which leads the Atlantic Division, has won three games in a row and is 10-1-0 in its past 11 home games. The Panthers are 21-6-1 overall since Thanksgiving.
Panthers All-Star defenseman Aaron Ekblad has a personal 15-game win streak – he hasn't lost since Dec. 12. Ekblad, a second-year player, also got into his first NHL fight, battling Leafs center Peter Holland to a first-period draw.
"He doesn't mind fighting," Petrovic said of the 6-4, 215-pound Ekblad. "We always wrestle all the time."
Leafs center Nick Spaling, who had missed 16 games with an upper-body injury, returned to action. But that was about the only good news for Toronto (17-21-9), which has not won in 12 Atlantic Division games this season, going 0-6-6.
Toronto goalie James Reimer, who entered the day leading the NHL with a .937 save percentage, allowed all five goals on 27 shots.
Center Nazem Kadri scored Toronto's only goal, with 2:25 left in the first period. Florida defenseman Erik Gudbranson slipped, allowing Kadri to skate to the front of the net, where he put a move on Luongo.
"That was a big-time goal," Phaneuf said of Kadri's play. "But the game can get away from you quick against a team like Florida."
Indeed, that was the last highlight for Toronto, which has one win in its past nine games, scoring 11 goals in that stretch.
In addition, Toronto's power play went 0-for-2 and is 2-of-46 in the past 14 games.
Reimer, who made his fourth straight start – his longest stretch of activity since November – said luck was not on his side on Tuesday.
"I've been fortunate (in the past where my teammates) have bailed me out," said Reimer, who will rest on Wednesday while goalie Jonathan Bernier starts at Tampa Bay. "But today wasn't one of those days."
