NEW YORK -- Left winger Carl Hagelin scored with 9:08 remaining in overtime to give the New York Rangers a 2-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of their first-round series at Madison Square Garden on Friday.

The Rangers won the best-of-seven series 4-1 and will face the winner of the New York Islanders/Washington Capitals series in the second round.

Hagelin's winner came after he took the puck in the right face-off circle, wheeled toward the net and beat Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to the glove side.

Center Derek Stepan also had a goal for the Rangers while goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped 37 shots.

Left winger Nick Spaling scored for the Penguins, who were backed by goaltender Fleury's 34 stops.

The Rangers jumped to an early 1-0 lead on Stepan's power-play goal, his second of the series. Fleury made a save on a point shot by defenseman Dan Boyle, but Stepan was able to muscle home the rebound from near the crease for the Rangers' third power-play goal of the series.

The Penguins drew even in the second period, as Spaling scored his first of the postseason with 2:37 remaining. Center Sidney Crosby flipped a pass toward the crease, and the puck bounced off right winger Steve Downie, then Lundqvist, then the body of Spaling before trickling across the goal line.

The goal was reviewed in Toronto and the call on the ice was allowed to stand.

The game remained tied at 1 during the first half of the third period despite Crosby hitting a crossbar during a Penguins power play and Rangers left winger J.T. Miller ringing a shot off the crossbar following a turnover by Penguins left winger Evgeni Malkin.

Boyle had a chance to put his team ahead with less than four minutes remaining, but he flubbed a shot attempt with a wide-open net in front of him.

Rangers right winger Mats Zuccarello left the game in the first period with an undisclosed injury and did not return.

NOTES: The Penguins were without D Kris Letang (concussion), D Christian Ehrhoff (upper body), D Derrick Pouliot (upper body) and LW Beau Bennett (upper body). For the third straight game, rookie LW Scott Wilson took Bennett's spot on the third line. ... Penguins RW Craig Adams was a healthy scratch. ... Rangers LW James Sheppard was a healthy scratch. ... Rangers D Kevin Klein (arm) was given a 50/50 chance of playing by coach Alain Vigneault in the morning, but Klein did not take part in pregame warmups. Klein has not played since March 11.
