Senators 7, Coyotes 2: Captain Erik Karlsson recorded his fourth tally in four games and joined three others with a goal and an assist as host Ottawa throttled Arizona for the second time this month.
Rookie Mike Hoffman netted his team-leading 17th goal and Milan Michalek scored to put the Senators ahead to stay - the duo also tallied in Ottawa's 5-1 win over the Coyotes on Jan. 10. Mark Stone, All-Star Bobby Ryan and Mika Zibanejad each scored and set up a goal, Jean-Gabriel Pageau also tallied and defenseman Marc Methot notched a career-high three assists.
Blue-liner Zbynek Michalek - Milan's brother - scored 40 seconds into the contest and Sam Gagner also tallied for Arizona, which has dropped eight of its last nine (1-6-2). Louis Dominigue made nine saves in his NHL debut in relief of Mike Smith, who yielded five goals on 20 shots to match last season's career-high total of 21 regulation losses - albeit set in 28 fewer appearances.
Milan Michalek's wrist shot from the left faceoff circle beat Smith over his left shoulder with 3:09 remaining in the second period to give Ottawa a 2-1 lead. Stone doubled the advantage 2:03 later by deflecting Methot's point drive before Ryan and Pageau effectively put the game out of reach with goals 20 seconds apart early in the third.
The Coyotes struck first as Zbynek Michalek kept the puck just inside the blue line and wristed a shot that Methot failed to knock down with his glove before it sailed past Robin Lehner (35 saves). Hoffman answered 29 seconds later, beating Smith between the pads from the right circle.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ottawa D Chris Phillips skated in his 1,178th game with the club to tie Daniel Alfredsson for the most in franchise history. ... Ryan, who set up a goal in the first meeting, has three tallies and eight assists in his last nine contests. ... Arizona C Martin Hanzal sat out with an upper-body injury but is considered day-to-day by the team. ... The Senators failed to break the first-period deadlock despite receiving five power-play opportunities in the opening 20 minutes.
