Flames 5, Coyotes 3: Paul Byron registered his first career two-goal performance and David Jones added a tally and an assist as Calgary captured the opener of its five-game homestand.
Captain Mark Giordano extended his point streak to eight games with a goal and Sean Monahan also tallied for the Flames, who went 2-1-2 on a five-game homestand last month. Sven Baertschi notched two assists after missing a contest with a virus and Jonas Hiller made 20 saves in improving to 8-2-1 in his last 11 decisions.
Antoine Vermette and captain Shane Doan each recorded a goal and an assist for the Coyotes, who have lost three in a row. Joe Vitale also scored and Mike Smith turned aside 20 shots.
Byron opened the scoring at 11:06 of the first period with a backhander from the left hash marks, but Doan answered just over 5 1/2 minutes later by beating Hiller with a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle. Byron put Calgary back in front 2:03 into the second, receiving a cross-slot feed from Baertschi and firing the puck between Smith's pads, and Monahan knocked in a loose puck in the crease 4 1/2 minutes afterward for a 3-1 lead.
Vermette converted Doan's cross-crease pass during a power play midway through the period and Vitale beat Hiller with a sharp-angle shot from low along the right-wing boards four minutes later to forge a tie. The Flames moved ahead for good with 3:37 remaining in the session, when Giordano beat Smith from the bottom of the right circle, and Jones extended his goal-scoring streak to three games when his pass attempt from the right-wing boards caromed off Arizona defenseman Connor Murphy's leg and in.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Byron was denied his first career hat trick as he was stopped by Smith on a breakaway with less than 11 1/2 minutes remaining in the third period. ... Arizona converted its only power-play opportunity after going 0-for-18 over its previous four games. ... The Coyotes haven't won in Calgary since Feb. 23, 2012, losing each of their last six visits.
