Kings 5, Sharks 1: Anze Kopitar snapped a tie late in the second period as visiting Los Angeles scored five unanswered goals to complete an historic comeback and advance to the second round of the Western Conference playoffs.

Kopitar and Tanner Pearson each finished with a goal and an assist as the Kings became the fourth team in NHL history to overcome an 0-3 series deficit. Defenseman Drew Doughty, Tyler Toffoli and captain Dustin Brown also tallied while Jonathan Quick finished with 39 saves for Los Angeles, which will take on Pacific Division champion Anaheim in the second round.

Blue-liner Matt Irwin netted the lone goal for the Sharks, who failed to convert on six power-play opportunities and went 0-for-15 over the last three games. Antti Niemi returned after being benched for Game 6 and turned aside 25 shots.

After a scoreless first period, San Jose broke through 28 seconds into the middle session as Irwin unleashed a wrist shot from the right point that sailed past a screened Quick. Los Angeles cashed in on a power-play opportunity at 4:57 to tie it, as Doughty buried a shot from the left faceoff circle after Marian Gaborik's shot from the right circle went wide and caromed off the end boards.

Kopitar put the Kings ahead with 1:21 left in the period, receiving a feed from the bottom of the right circle by Justin Williams and switching to his backhand before lifting the puck past Niemi. Toffoli created some breathing room 4:40 into the third, when he took a backhand pass from Pearson and beat Niemi from the left side of the crease. Brown and Pearson sealed the win with empty-net goals.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Kings joined the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, the 1975 New York Islanders and the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers as the only teams to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first three games. ... Los Angeles' Matt Greene made his first appearance since Game 2 in place of fellow D Willie Mitchell, who was sidelined with a lower-body injury. ... Quick allowed two goals over the final three games after yielding 16 in the first three contests. ... San Jose C Joe Pavelski registered a game-high 11 shots on goal, while Los Angeles was led by C Mike Richards (eight), who also was a member of the 2010 Philadelphia team that made the monumental comeback.
