Avalanche 5, Islanders 2: Matt Duchene broke out of a lengthy slump with a pair of goals, including the 100th of his career, as Colorado held on to end a six-game road losing streak against New York.
Captain Gabriel Landeskog extended his point streak to a career-high nine games with a goal and an assist while rookie Nathan MacKinnon also scored to stretch his career-best point run to eight contests for the Avalanche, who completed a 2-2-0 road trip. Paul Stastny added a late tally, defenseman Tyson Barrie notched three assists and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 30 shots.
Captain John Tavares and defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky scored 5-on-3 goals 57 seconds apart midway through the third period for the Islanders, who have lost seven of eight (1-6-1). Visnovsky added an assist and Evgeni Nabokov made 22 saves as New York split the two-game season series with Colorado.
MacKinnon got things started for the Avalanche with 6:56 remaining in the first period, grabbing the rebound of Landeskog's stuff attempt and firing it into an open net as Nabokov was run into by the Colorado captain. Duchene, who had scored just once in his previous 23 contests, skated down the right wing and around Brock Nelson before beating Nabokov at 7:49 of the second for his milestone tally.
Duchene made it 3-0 less than three minutes later, converting a cross-ice pass by Barrie with a shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle to complete his fourth two-goal effort of the season. Tavares got New York on the board 11:17 into the third and Visnovsky beat Giguere with a one-timer from the top of the right circle to cut the deficit to one, but Landeskog and Stastny sealed it with empty-netters.
