Maple Leafs 4, Senators 1: James van Riemsdyk scored twice and James Reimer made 49 saves as visiting Toronto clinched its first playoff berth in eight seasons.
Nazem Kadri and Joffrey Lupul also tallied to lift the Maple Leafs two points clear of the New York Islanders for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Phil Kessel and defenseman Cody Franson assisted on both of van Riemsdyk’s goals for Toronto, which won for the fourth time in five games against provincial-rival Ottawa.
Rookie Jakob Silfverberg scored and Craig Anderson stopped 18 shots for the Senators, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. Ottawa resides in seventh place, two points ahead of the New York Rangers.
Franson’s point shot deflected off van Riemsdyk’s shin pad to open the scoring at 8:22 of the second period. With Ottawa forward Zack Smith serving a high-sticking penalty, van Riemsdyk collected a rebound and slid the puck past Anderson from the edge of the crease just over four minutes later.
Silfverberg cut the deficit to one in the final minute of the second period after his wrist shot from the high slot beat Reimer. The one-goal margin held until Kadri fired a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle between Anderson’s pads and Lupul skated in alone and beat the netminder high late in the third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Reimer, who improved to 5-1-1 in his last seven starts, is 6-0-0 at Ottawa in his career. ... The Maple Leafs outscored the Senators 18-8 in their season series. ... Only three Toronto players were active in the NHL in 2004, which was the last time the Maple Leafs made the playoffs: Lupul, D John-Michael Liles and RW Colton Orr, who played in one game - the first of his career - with Boston. ... Anderson had allowed a total of three goals in his three previous starts.
