No. 15 Maryland 69, Nebraska 65: Freshman Melo Trimble tallied 26 points, six rebounds and five assists as the host Terrapins improved to 16-1 at home.

Dez Wells and Jake Layman poured in 14 points apiece for Maryland (22-5, 10-4 Big Ten), which improved to 8-0 in games decided by six or fewer points. The Terrapins, who are tied for second in the conference with Purdue 2½ games behind Wisconsin, will get their chance to close that gap when they host the No. 4 Badgers on Tuesday.

Walter Pitchford knocked down five 3-pointers en route to a career-high tying 19 points and seven rebounds for Nebraska (13-13, 5-9), which fell to 0-7 on the road in Big Ten play and has dropped six of seven overall. Shavon Shields added 13 points and freshman Nick Fuller chipped in a season-high 12 off the bench while the Big Ten’s third-leading scorer, Terran Petteway, finished with eight points and a career-high nine assists.

After opening up an 11-point advantage at the 5½-minute mark of the first half, Maryland could manage only one more field goal over the next eight-plus minutes and Fuller scored seven straight points to fuel a 17-2 surge spanning both halves as Nebraska pulled ahead 38-34. The Terrapins answered with a 15-4 run to reestablish a seven-point edge with 11½ minutes left, only to watch the Cornhuskers score on three straight possessions to rally within one midway through the second half.

Shields and Petteway combined for six points over a two-minute stretch to pull even at 54-54 with 5½ minutes left before Maryland used back-to-back 3-pointers from Trimble to cap an 8-0 burst. Pitchford nailed three jumpers – including two triples – over the final two minutes and Nebraska had a chance to close the gap to one with less than 30 seconds remaining, but Tai Webster lost control of the ball on a layup attempt and Maryland hit its last seven foul shots – five by Trimble – to preserve the victory.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Maryland shot 46.5 percent from the field, extending the Cornhuskers’ Big Ten-best streak of not allowing an opponent to shoot 50 percent to 37 games. …Nebraska surpassed its previous season high in bench points (18) with 22 points before the break, half of which came from Pitchford. The Cornhuskers finished with 36 points from their reserves. … The Terrapins, who outscored Nebraska 22-3 at the foul line, have made 35 more free throws in conference play (238) than the Cornhuskers have attempted (203).
