No. 11 Creighton 80, Saint Joseph’s 51: Doug McDermott scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the first half as the Bluejays rebounded from a surprising home loss with a rout of the visiting Hawks.
Gregory Echenique added 16 points and Grant Gibbs dished out a season-high nine assists for Creighton (7-1), which saw its 42-game home winning streak in the month of November snapped against Boise State on Wednesday.
McDermott made sure another upset was not in the cards as he scored the game’s first five and 15 of the Bluejays’ first 21 points, and Creighton rolled to a 24-5 lead with 10:53 left in the first half.
The margin ballooned to 45-13 on a layup from Andre Yates and it wasn’t until a 3-pointer from Papa Ndao with 2:11 left before the break that Saint Joseph’s (4-2) had more points than McDermott in the first half. The Hawks got no closer than 24 points in the second half.
Langston Galloway was the only St. Joseph’s player to finish in double figures with 10 points.
