Freshman Myles Mack scored a career-high 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting as Rutgers got the better of Stony Brook, 67-58, at the MSG Holiday Festival in New York on Saturday.
Gilvydas Biruta added 13 points and Eli Carter scored 11 for the Scarlet Knights (6-5), who have put together back-to-back wins for the first time since November.
Rutgers is integrating a handful of new players into the lineup this season and the freshmen have taken turns having breakout games of late. Carter had set the pace with 38 points over the previous two contests while Mack struggled.
Freshman guard Jerome Seagears helped the Scarlet Knights to a 31-26 lead at the break with eight points in the first half before yielding to Mack, who scored 15 in the second to help Rutgers pull away.
Mack’s 3-pointer early in the second half sparked a 12-5 run over the next seven minutes as Rutgers extended the lead to double digits, 45-35. Carter’s layup with 1:57 pushed it out to a 13-point gap and Mack sealed it from the free throw line.
Dave Coley scored 17 points to lead the Seawolves, who shot 27 percent (16 of 60) from the floor.
