Anthony Raffa had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Coastal Carolina survived visiting LSU’s furious second-half rally to win 71-63 on Tuesday night in Conway, S.C.
The Chanticleers (3-0) led by 10 at halftime and by as many as 13 after the break, but the Tigers (1-1) rallied multiple times to keep the game close.
Sam McLaurin added 13 points and 16 rebounds for Coastal Carolina, which beat LSU for the second time in as many seasons.
Ralston Turner scored 15 points to lead the Tigers, who were playing their first of four straight games away from Baton Rouge after starting the season with a home win over Nicholls State.
After LSU jumped out to an 18-9 lead, Coastal Carolina, the defending Big South Conference champion, closed the first half on a 25-6 run to take a 34-24 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Chanticleers picked up right where they left off and opened up a 50-37 lead on Raffa’s layup with 12:08 remaining. But LSU responded with a 14-2 run and cut the gap to 52-51 on Justin Hamilton’s jump shot with just over six minutes left.
That was as close as the Tigers ever got, though, as Coastal Carolina iced the game with free throws at the end.
The Chanticleers dominated the Tigers inside, outrebounding them 53-34 and outscoring them in the paint 38-28.
