Marquette had plenty of players pitch in to make up for losing star Lazar Hayward to the NBA, as the Golden Eagles opened the season with a 97-58 rout over Prairie View A&M at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.
Jimmy Butler had 18 points, Davante Gardner netted 17 and all 11 Golden Eagles who played found the scoring column in the victory.
Hayward, the team's leading scorer and rebounder last year (18.1, 7.5) was in Minnesota on Friday night playing for the Timberwolves against the Knicks.
But Marquette came out and shot a blistering 21 for 34 (62 percent) from the field in the first half while rolling up a 53-23 halftime advantage.
Buzz Williams' Golden Eagles finished 22-12 in 2009-10 after being upended by Washington 80-78 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Tant Simpson had 14 points and Michael Griffin 11 for Prairie View, which didn't return a single double-digit scorer from last year's 16-14 squad. Give the Panthers bonus points, however, for having perhaps the best name in college basketball, sophomore guard Beloved Rogers.
