Spurs 114, Trail Blazers 97: Kawhi Leonard led seven players in double figures with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting as San Antonio turned away visiting Portland to grab a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals.
Tony Parker collected 16 points and 10 assists and Manu Ginobili scored 16 off the bench for the Spurs, who visit Portland for Game 3 on Saturday. Leonard went 4-of-4 from 3-point range as San Antonio hit 12-of-20 from beyond the arc.
Nicolas Batum recorded 21 points and nine rebounds and Damian Lillard scored 19 points to lead the Trail Blazers. LaMarcus Aldridge added 16 points and 10 boards and Wesley Matthews scored 14 for Portland, which was outscored 15-6 over the final 5:20.
The Spurs led by as much as 20 points in the third quarter and took an 87-71 cushion into the fourth but could not shake the Trail Blazers. Batum’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to 99-91 with 5:37 remaining but Boris Diaw responded with a 3-pointer and Leonard buried his fourth 3-pointer just over two minutes later and Ginobili hit another to help San Antonio put it away.
The Trail Blazers were within 31-30 less than a minute into the second quarter when the Spurs took control, getting two 3-pointers apiece from Marco Belinelli and Danny Green in a 21-4 run over less than four minutes. San Antonio, which shot 60 percent in the first half of Game 1, slumped to 57.7 percent from the field in opening 24 minutes of Game 2 to take a 70-51 lead into the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Portland F Thomas Robinson got a scare before the game when he discovered a snake in his locker. A trainer removed the snake, which was determined to be non-poisonous. … Trail Blazers G Mo Williams suffered a groin injury and did not return, totaling four points in nine minutes. … San Antonio struggled to 6-of-14 from the free-throw line.
