Rangers 4, Phillies 3: Jonathan Papelbon surrendered three runs in the ninth inning, forcing in the winning run by walking Shin-Soo Choo as Texas rallied to win its season-opening series against visiting Philadelphia.

Texas was limited to five hits through eight innings before erupting for four hits in the ninth, including Jim Adduci's run-scoring infield hit and Leonys Martin's game-tying single. Papelbon (0-1) walked David Murphy to load the bases before a 3-2 offering to Choo sailed high and wide, giving the Rangers a walk-off win for the second straight night.

The rally spoiled a solid start for Phillies right-hander Kyle Kendrick, who allowed one run in seven innings and was staked to an early 3-0 lead thanks in part to Ryan Howard's two-run homer in the third. Rangers lefty Robbie Ross, who was making his first career start after pitching out of the bullpen the last two seasons, allowed three runs - two earned - over five frames.

Texas got on the board in the seventh as Martin's single to right plated Mitch Moreland, who had tripled with one out, before the Rangers' offense broke through against Papelbon in the ninth. Adrian Beltre started the decisive rally with a leadoff single before Moreland doubled with one out in advance of the hits by Adduci and Martin and the walks to Murphy and Choo, all of which helped Seth Rosin (1-0) notch his first career win.

Back-to-back hits against Ross - a double by Carlos Ruiz and a single by Chase Utley - led to a first-inning run for the Phillies, who pushed their advantage to 3-0 two frames later. Ruiz walked with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch before Howard launched a 1-1 offering over the right-center field wall for his first homer of 2014.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins missed the game to attend the birth of his second child. ... The teams combined for five errors, including three by Philadelphia. ... The Phillies had a baserunner in every inning from the fourth to the eighth but could not score in any of those frames.
