Rangers 5, Twins 4: Leonys Martin doubled twice and scored for the third time on Rougned Odor’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as visiting Texas edged Minnesota to take three of four in the series.
Shin-Soo Choo contributed a three-run double and Robinson Chirinos also had a run-scoring hit for the Rangers, who had 12 hits overall. Martin doubled off the right-center field fence against Casey Fien (3-2) to start the eighth, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chirinos and narrowly beat the throw home when Odor flied to center.
Alexi Ogando (2-2) recorded four outs as Texas won for the fifth time in sixth games. Jason Frasor struck out two in a perfect eighth, Neal Cotts retired Joe Mauer to start the ninth and Joakim Soria allowed a two-out single to Oswaldo Arcia before striking out Josh Willingham for his 10th save in 11 opportunities.
Choo delivered a bases-loaded double into the left-field corner off Samuel Deduno to give Texas a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Trevor Plouffe and Willingham each had RBI singles in the third against Nick Martinez as the Twins pulled within one.
Willingham’s first homer of the season – a 436-foot blast into the second deck in left-center field – gave Minnesota a 4-3 lead in the fifth. The Rangers tied the score in the following inning on an RBI single by Chirinos.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Deduno allowed four runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings, while Martinez gave up four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. … Rangers OF Alex Rios went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. … Twins OF Aaron Hicks (back) was held out of the lineup but ran for Arcia in the ninth.
