Pirates 7, Mets 3: Garrett Jones hit a three-run homer and Wandy Rodriguez tossed six solid innings as visiting Pittsburgh downed New York.
Jones added two doubles and scored twice while Starling Marte and Pedro Alvarez each scored and drove home a run for the Pirates. Rodriguez (3-2), who also recorded an RBI on a fielder’s choice groundout, allowed one run on six hits to earn his first road victory in four tries.
Anthony Recker hit his second career home run – and first as a Met – in the fifth and Jordany Valdespin went deep in the ninth for New York, which has scored 28 runs over its last 11 home games. Shaun Marcum (0-3) yielded season highs in runs (six) and hits (nine) over 4 2/3 innings.
After Marcum set the Pirates down in order in the first, Jones led off the second with a double and Jose Tabata singled to set the table for Alvarez, who lined a single over the head of first baseman Ike Davis for the game’s first run. Rodriguez plated Alvarez with a grounder and Marte followed with a sacrifice fly.
Pittsburgh extended the lead to 6-0 in the fifth when Jones lined Marcum’s 1-1 cut fastball off the concrete wall just above the top of the fence in right. The play was originally ruled a two-run triple, but Pirates manager Clint Hurdle lobbied crew chief Joe West to review it and the call was overturned.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Marcum became the first pitcher in Mets history to last fewer than five innings in each of his first three starts with the club. … Rodriguez improved to 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA in his last five starts against New York. … RHP Jason Grilli, who allowed the game-winning hit to New York’s Mike Baxter in Thursday’s series opener, came on with two outs in the ninth after Jose Contreras surrendered two runs and three hits. The Pirates' closer forced Ruben Tejada to line out to center for his 14th save.
