Giants 3, Cubs 2: Madison Bumgarner work 6 2/3 strong innings to outduel Jeff Samardzija and guide visiting San Francisco past Chicago.
Marco Scutaro recorded three hits and an RBI and Gregor Blanco and Pablo Sandoval each drove in a run for the Giants, who bounced back after blowing a ninth-inning lead Friday. Bumgarner (3-0) allowed two runs and six hits as San Francisco picked up its fifth win in the last six.
Samardzija (1-2) struck out five to lift his total to 27 in three starts, but could not keep the Giants off the board, allowing two runs and seven hits in six innings. Dioner Navarro, whose solo homer tied the game in the ninth Friday, hit his second pinch-hit blast in as many days with a two-run shot in the seventh for the Cubs.
Andres Torres led off the fifth with a double and came in to score on Blanco’s two-out single to right. San Francisco tacked on another run in the sixth when Scutaro came in on Sandoval’s single, and Scutaro drove in Bumgarner with a single in the seventh.
The Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but Santiago Casilla got Welington Castillo to ground into a double play to end the inning. After blowing the opportunity Friday, Giants closer Sergio Romo got the day off and Casilla stayed on for the six-out save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago LF Alfonso Soriano went 3-for-4 with a stolen base. … Cubs LHP James Russell worked a perfect inning of relief and has allowed one hit without walking a batter in four total innings this season spanning six appearances. … San Francisco CF Angel Pagan did not start because of a sore right wrist. He entered the game to play center field during a double switch in the eight inning and popped out in the ninth.
