White Sox 4, Indians 2: Chris Sale delivered the goods in his first career start and Alejandro De Aza and A.J. Pierzynski clubbed first-inning home runs as Chicago toppled host Cleveland.
Sale (1-0), who worked out of the bullpen the last two seasons, yielded one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. He struck out five and walked two, keeping the Indians off the scoreboard until Carlos Santana singled in a run with two out in the sixth inning.
Addison Reed and Matt Thornton each recorded two outs to hold the lead for Hector Santiago, who gave up a home run to Jose Lopez in the ninth but still picked up his second save in as many opportunities.
De Aza put the White Sox in front to stay when he took Josh Tomlin (0-1) deep to right field on the fourth pitch of the game. Pierzynski followed with a two-out, two-run shot later in the first inning, giving Sale a 3-0 cushion before he even stepped on the mound.
Brent Morel plated De Aza with an RBI single in the fifth.
Tomlin, who missed the final month of the 2011 season with an injured elbow, struck out seven in five innings of work but surrendered four runs on seven hits and a walk.
GAME NOTEBOOK: De Aza’s first-inning homer was the first leadoff blast of his career and the first by a White Sox batter since Scott Podsednik at Detroit on Oct. 2, 2009. ... The White Sox collected 11 hits after totaling just 19 in their first three games of the season. ... Cleveland came into the game batting a paltry .153 - the lowest figure in the American League.
