Gio Gonzalez allowed two hits over eight scoreless innings as the Oakland Athletics closed the season with back-to-back shutouts after a 2-0 victory over the host Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
Gonzalez (16-12) gave up three walks and a single in the first three innings but retired 14 straight Seattle hitters before allowing a double to Alex Liddi in the seventh inning. He tied a career high with 11 strikeouts. Andrew Bailey came on in the ninth and retired the side in order for his 24th save.
The Athletics got the only offense they would need in the second when Jai Miller hit his second career home run, a two-run shot to center field against Anthony Vasquez (1-6).
Vasquez departed after two innings and 43 pitches, giving up four hits. Five Seattle relievers combined to strike out 11 batters over the final seven innings, yielding only three more hits.
