Rookie Mike Trout homered twice and drove in five runs, and the Los Angeles Angels scored eight times in the fifth inning en route to a 13-6 victory over the host Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.
Trout hit a solo homer in the second and hit a three-run shot in the fourth as Los Angeles remained 3 1/2 games behind first-place Texas in the American League West.
Jerome Williams (2-0) allowed four runs in seven innings as the Angels won for the eighth time in 11 games.
Torii Hunter and Mark Trumbo started the fourth by drawing walks against Anthony Vasquez (1-1) before Trout’s one-out blast deep into the left-field stands provided the Angels with a 4-0 lead.
Seattle pulled within 4-2 in the bottom half when Mike Carp doubled home one run and Miguel Olivo’s single plated the other.
Howie Kendrick and Hunter had run-scoring singles to drive Vasquez out of the game in the fifth. Jeff Gray walked three straight hitters, including Vernon Wells and Trout with the bases loaded before Erick Aybar hit a two-run single to make it 10-2. Maicer Izturis added a sacrifice fly and Peter Bourjos had a run-scoring single to cap the uprising.
Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a two-run single in the seventh.
Vasquez gave up eight runs (seven earned) and seven hits in four-plus innings.
