John Petty Jr. scored 16 points to lead a balanced attack, and Alabama rolled to an 88-71 win over Providence in the fifth-place game of the Maui Invitational Wednesday night in Asheville, N.C.
The Crimson Tide (3-1) got 15 points and six rebounds from Jaden Shackelford and 15 points from Josh Primo in their second win of the tournament. Alabama rebounded from a blowout loss to Stanford on Monday to close out their Asheville experience with back-to-back wins over UNLV and Providence.
Alabama turned a nine-point halftime lead into a 23-point advantage before the halfway point of the second half, helped by a 13-0 run. The Crimson Tide hit their first six 3-point shots of the half.
Shackelford hit three of those, and Jordan Bruner's short jumper with 10:18 to play in the game made the score 72-49.
Providence (2-2) ended up with sixth place after one win in three games in the Maui Invitational. David Duke had 19 points and Nate Watson added 17 to lead the Friars.
The Friars went on a 12-0 run to cut Alabama's lead to 74-63 with still plenty of time left in the game. But Josh Primo drilled a long 3 with 4:03 to go to put the Tide ahead by 15, 80-65.
Alabama took a 41-32 lead into halftime with 10 points from Petty, and the Friars made just 9 of 26 first-half shots. The Crimson Tide dominated on the boards with 48 rebounds to 28 for the Friars.
Providence scored the game's first eight points before Alabama scored the next 11 to take the lead for good. The Tide led by as many as 12 points in the first half.
Alabama improved to 5-3 all-time against Providence.
