Senior 7-footer A.J. Hammons had 18 points and six rebounds, and No. 21 Purdue used smothering defense to romp to a 61-39 victory against previously undefeated Old Dominion on Saturday in the Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic semifinals at Uncasville, Conn.
The Boilermakers (4-0) led 36-30 with just more than 13 minutes remaining, then used a 25-5 run that included three 3-pointers from guard Kendall Stephens and two from guard Dakota Mathias to extend their advantage to 61-35 with 1:49 remaining.
Stephens scored 12 points for Purdue, and 7-2 sophomore center Isaac Haas added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Old Dominion (3-1) made only 14 of 61 field goal attempts (23 percent).
A Stephens 3-pointer early in the game gave Purdue a 5-2 lead, and the Boilermakers never trailed again, although two of their best offensive players -- guards Rapheal Davis and Vince Edwards -- combined for only two points, an Edwards basket in the second half.
Purdue advanced to Sunday's championship game and will play either Florida or St. Joseph's (Pa).
