Iowa State knocked Providence from the ranks of the unbeaten on Friday as the Cyclones held off the Friars 64-54 in the third round of the South Padre Island Invitational.
Iowa State (4-1) used an 8-0 run early in the second half to take a 41-34 lead.
Chris Allen scored 11 of his team-high 15 points in the first half while Tyrus McGee came off the bench to add a career-high 14 for Iowa State.
The Cyclones made 11 3-pointers, the fourth time in five games they have made at least 10. Iowa State also outrebounded Providence 46-27, led by Royce White's career-high 16 boards.
The Friars (4-1) got a game-high 21 points from point guard Vincent Council, 17 of those coming in the first half as he scored 10 of Providence's first 14 points.
Gerard Coleman added 20 points and eight rebounds for Providence, which will play Northern Iowa on Saturday. Iowa State concludes tourney play on Saturday against Rice.
Iowa State and Northern Iowa, the only 3-0 teams in the four-game tournament, will meet Wednesday in Ames, Iowa.
