Hugh Robertson led the way with 17 points and Jarrid Famous added 15 points and 13 rebounds as South Florida picked up its first conference win with a 79-72 triumph over Providence on Sunday.

Augustus Gilchrist chipped in 10 points and seven boards for South Florida (7-12, 1-5 Big East), which snapped a seven-game slide.

Providence (11-8, 0-6) came out strong, shooting 58 percent (19 of 33) in the first half and taking a 41-29 edge into the break. The defense-deficient Friars also managed to hold the Bulls to 30-percent shooting (10 of 33) from the field.

But the problems that have made Providence one of the worst teams defensively in the NCAA resurfaced in the second half. South Florida took to the inside, getting its first 14 field goals on layups or dunks. The Bulls took the lead for good, 60-59, on Gilchrist’s jumper with 4:52 remaining. Robertson followed with a 3-pointer and the Bulls held on through the finish.

Marshon Brooks finished with 28 points for the Friars, who get No. 17 Louisville and No. 7 Villanova next week.

South Florida has a chance for more conference wins over the next two weeks, with unranked Big East foes Rutgers, West Virginia, DePaul and Providence again on the schedule.
