JaJuan Johnson scored 25 of his career-high 31 points in the first half Saturday and No. 17 Purdue used a late spurt to post its fifth straight win, 65-52 over in-state rival Indiana State at Conseco Field House in Indianapolis.
E’Twaun Moore scored all 16 of his points in the second half for the Boilermakers (10-1), who improved to 29-4 all-time against the Sycamores (5-6).
Despite Johnson’s huge day, the Boilermakers needed a 18-7 second-half run to avoid the major upset and improve to 12-10 all-time on the Indiana Pacers’ home court.
Dwayne Lathan’s jumper pulled Indiana State to within 47-45 with 9:08 left. But it was all Boilermakers the rest of the way.
The Sycamores were seeking their first win over a ranked team since 2006, when they knocked off No. 15 Butler. But they couldn’t contain Johnson.
An Indianapolis native, Johnson scored all but seven of Purdue’s 32 first-half points on 9-of-14 shooting. The rest of the team was just 2 for 17 from the floor. As a result, Purdue held a slim 32-30 lead at the break.
Lathan finished with 15 points for Indiana State, which shot just 34 percent (20 of 58).
