St. John’s came from behind to beat Ball State, 78-73 in overtime, Wednesday in the opening round of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.
The Red Storm (2-1) advance to the second round to face Drake.
St. John’s built a 12-point halftime lead, but found itself down by six with three minutes to play. Justin Brownlee’s layup tied the score at 63 with 30 seconds. Ball State missed a potential winning shot as time expired, sending the game into overtime.
The Red Storm jumped ahead by seven early in overtime and held on to knock off the Cardinals (2-2).
Brownlee led the Storm with 20 points and eight rebounds.
Jesse Berry led Ball State with 18.
