Texas bounced back from a bitter defeat against one of the nation’s top teams with an 84-50 home victory over Sam Houston State on Tuesday night.
The No. 21 Longhorns (3-1) had won their first three games of the season, including two by 31 points. Texas’ perfect start was halted with a 68-66 loss to No. 4 Pittsburgh in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic final Friday, but the Longhorns showed no ill effects of that defeat against Sam Houston State.
Texas never trailed, and took control with a 13-0 run in the first half that turned a 12-8 lead into a 25-8 advantage. Jordan Hamilton sparked the run with seven points. Ahead 33-18 at halftime, the Longhorns did not let up. A 9-0 spurt pushed the advantage to 49-26 with 14:18 to play on J’Covan Brown’s free throw.
Hamilton scored a game-high 25 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field. Dogus Balbay scored 14 points and Brown finished with 12 points off the bench. The Longhorns shot 55 percent from the field, and held the Bearkats to 29.2 percent shooting.
Antuan Bootle scored 16 points, while Gilberto Clavell had 15 for Sam Houston State (2-1).
Both teams are off until Saturday, when the Longhorns play host to Rice, and Sam Houston State travels to Colorado State.
