Jereme Richmond converted a layup with 12 seconds left to get No. 16 Illinois into overtime, but 22nd-ranked Texas scored the first eight points of the extra session to take a 90-84 victory on Thursday night in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic.
Jordan Hamilton scored 25 points and freshman Tristan Thompson had 20 for the Longhorns (3-0), who also got nine rebounds and six blocks from the 6-8 Thompson in his third collegiate game.
Gary Johnson opened the overtime with a pair of free throws, then Hamilton and Johnson converted layups before Thompson hit a short jumper for an 83-75 lead with 3 1/2 minutes left. Illinois (3-1) closed within three on a shot from the arc with 1:11 left by Bill Cole, but the Illini never had the ball with a chance to tie.
Demetri McCamey had 22 points, eight assists and five rebounds for Illinois (3-1), which shot 37.3 percent from the field, including 10-of-30 from the arc.
Texas will play No. 5 Pittsburgh in Friday night's championship game.
