Junior guard Jorge Gutierrez scored a team-high 18 points to lead California to an 80-63 victory over Cal State Northridge in its season opener at Berkeley, Calif., on Tuesday night.
Gutierrez was 13 for 15 from the free throw-line. Senior center Mark Frison-Sanders had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Bears, who also got 12 points from Harper Kamp and outrebounded Northridge 44-27.
Allen Crabbe's 3-pointer with 14:29 remaining gave the Golden Bears a 49-39 lead, and keyed a 13-2 run that helped Cal pull away. The Golden Bears outscored the Matadors 44-26 in the second half after trailing 37-36 at halftime.
It was the second consecutive loss to a Pac-10 team for the Matadors, who were blasted 83-50 by UCLA on Friday. Rashaun McLemore came off the bench to scored a game-high 24 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Matadors (0-2).
The Golden Bears have won 20 straight non-conference games at home, and are 6-0 all-time against Northridge.
