Atlanta Braves left-hander Max Fried allowed only one run over seven innings in a 5-1 win Wednesday over the visiting San Diego Padres, the team that originally drafted him.
Fried (4-1) allowed only a 415-foot solo home run to San Diego slugger Manny Machado in the fourth inning. He gave up four hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out seven. Fried, the No. 1 pick by the Padres in 2012, reduced his ERA to 2.11.
Fried threw only 85 pitches, 58 for strikes, and permitted two or fewer runs for the fifth time in six starts.
The struggling Atlanta bullpen had a big moment in the eighth. The Padres loaded the bases against rookie reliever Jacob Webb, but could not score. Josh Tomlin inherited the mess with no outs and retired the next three Padres, striking out Machado and Hunter Renfroe to end the threat.
A.J. Minter worked a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation.
The loss ruined the major league debut of Padres right-hander Cal Quantrill, the team's No. 1 draft pick from 2016 and the son of former big-leaguer Paul Quantrill.
He pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on six hits and one walk, with three strikeouts.
Dansby Swanson drove in the first run for the Braves on a sacrifice fly in the first inning to score Ozzie Albies, who led off with a triple.
Machado tied the score in the fourth with his fifth homer, but the Braves regained the lead 2-1 in the fifth when Albies doubled home Ender Inciarte.
Atlanta added three runs in the seventh against reliever Luis Perdomo. Ronald Acuna Jr. drove in a run with an infield single, then Swanson hit a long two-run homer, his sixth.
The series finale will be Thursday. Atlanta will send right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (0-0, 6.00) against San Diego left-hander Matt Strahm (0-2, 3.04). Strahm was originally scheduled to pitch on Wednesday, but the team pushed him back a day in favor of Quantrill.
