Iowa put a scare into Notre Dame, but guard Steve Vasturia and forward Bonzie Colson made sure the No. 17 Irish defeated the Hawkeyes 68-62 Friday in the Advocare Invitational at HP Fieldhouse in Orlando, Fla.
With the Irish up comfortably by 15 points in the second half, the Hawkeyes made a furious comeback, scoring 16 straight points.
When center Adam Woodbury canned a 3-pointer, Iowa had regained the lead at 47-46.
The Irish (4-1) retook the lead, and with the score 50-49, Vasturia and Colson went to work and scored nine of the next 11 points to put the Irish back on top for good.
Forward V.J. Beachem led four players in double figures for the Irish with 16. Guard Demetrius Jackson added 12 and Colson and Vasturia each chipped in with 11.
Iowa forward Jarrod Uthoff led all scorers with 20 points. Woodbury recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Guard Mike Gesell also scored 14 for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa (3-2) jumped out to an early 12-5 lead.
Then Beachem and Jackson heated up and scored 17 of the next 19 Irish points to put Notre Dame up 24-17.
The Irish went on a 15-10 run to take a 39-37 lead into intermission.
Beachem had 11 first-half points to lead Notre Dame while Uthoff scored 10 to lead the Hawkeyes.
