Cincinnati 62, No. 23 SMU 54: Jermaine Sanders led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds as the visiting Bearcats overcame a sloppy first half to knock off the Mustangs.

Farad Cobb added 14 points off the bench and Troy Caupain hit all three of his 3-point attempts en route to 14 points for Cincinnati (16-6, 7-3 American Athletic Conference), which swept the regular-season series. Octavius Ellis grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots to headline the defense for the Bearcats.

Cannen Cunningham scored 14 points off the bench to pace SMU (18-5, 9-2), which had an eight-game winning streak come to an end. Sterling Brown added 12 points and seven rebounds but the Mustangs struggled to 36.5 percent from the field and failed to take advantage of 17 forced turnovers.

Nic Moore’s free throws gave SMU a 44-43 lead with under eight minutes left before Cincinnati took off on a 10-2 run capped by Sanders’ 3-pointer with 4:47 to play. Sterling Brown’s putback pulled the Mustangs within 55-52 but Shaquille Thomas responded with a 3-pointer and the Bearcats closed it out at the free-throw line.

Cincinnati had 10 turnovers in the first 10 1/2 minutes and 13 in the first half but made the most of its opportunities and went 7-of-11 from the field in the period to go into the break trailing 25-20. Gary Clark’s jumper capped an 8-1 burst opening the second half as the Bearcats grabbed a 28-26 lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ellis had to be helped off the court with 6:38 to play after suffering an apparent left knee injury but returned minutes later. ... Cincinnati improved to 36-0 when reaching 60 points in the last two seasons. … The Mustangs had an 11-game home winning streak come to an end.
