No. 24 Memphis 82, Temple 79 (OT): Freshman Austin Nichols recorded 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks as the Tigers survived a scare from the visiting Owls in American Athletic Conference play.

Shaq Goodwin scored 20 points, including a dunk with less than a minute left in overtime to put Memphis up 80-77 and Temple missed three 3-pointers that could have tied the score. Michael Dixon Jr. and Joe Jackson added 12 points apiece as the Tigers (21-6, 10-4 AAC) won for the fifth time in six games.

Will Cummings scored 18 of his 24 points in the first half and Quenton DeCosey contributed 23 as Temple (7-19, 2-12) lost for the sixth time in seven games. Dalton Pepper added 20 points for the Owls, who made 11-of-31 from 3-point range and shot 40.5 percent from the field overall.

Temple trailed by 10 early in the second half, but DeCosey helped bring the Owls back and capped an 11-0 run with a layup to put them up 63-59. Goodwin’s basket put Memphis up 71-70 with a little under five minutes left and Jackson’s foul-line jumper pushed the lead to three with 1:40 remaining.

Pepper followed with a three-point play to tie it at 74 with 1:13 to go and both teams missed chances in the final minute of regulation. Pepper’s 3-pointer put the Owls ahead 77-76 in overtime before Jackson drove for two and Goodwin’s dunk gave Memphis the lead for good.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Nichols was 7-of-11 from the field and notched his first career double-double. … Temple F Anthony Lee, who averages 13.8 points and leads the AAC in rebounding (8.8), missed the game due to a toe injury. … Memphis is 175-20 at its home court – the FedExForum – since moving there for the 2004-05 campaign and 13-2 this season.
