Montana 67, Weber State 64: Kareem Jamar scored 20 points and Will Cherry added 18 as the host Grizzlies outlasted the Wildcats to win the Big Sky title and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Jordan Gregory added 12 points as top-seeded Montana (25-6) is part of NCAA field for the third time in four seasons.
Scott Bamforth, Damion Berry and Joel Bolomboy all had 12 points apiece for Weber State (26-6), which had a 13-game winning streak halted.
Cherry had 15 second-half points and scored six of them during an 8-0 surge that saw the Grizzlies turn a two-point deficit into a 56-50 lead with 5:37 remaining. The Wildcats pulled within 59-57 but Berry missed two free throws with 1:50 remaining and Cherry drained a 3-pointer with 46 seconds to go to help Montana hold on.
The Grizzlies had a nine-point lead after a 3-pointer by Mike Weisner with 5:57 left in the first half before the Wildcats finished the half with a 14-5 surge to knot the score at 34 entering the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Weber State’s winning streak was third-longest in the country behind Davidson (17) and Gonzaga (14). … Montana is two victories shy of matching the school record, accomplished twice. … This was the third time in four seasons the two schools met in the title game. Montana also beat the Wildcats in 2010 and 2012.
