Wichita State 75, Iowa 63: Cleanthony Early came off the bench to collect a season-high 25 points and nine rebounds and Malcolm Armstead added 14 points as the Shockers used a strong second half to win the Cancun Challenge championship.
Carl Hall scored 12 points for Wichita State (6-0), which is off to its best start since winning its first nine games in 2006. Aaron White led Iowa with 14 points, and Eric May added 13 off the bench.
Josh Oglesby came off the bench to score 12 points on four 3-pointers and help the Hawkeyes (5-1) take a 35-33 halftime lead, but was shut out in the second half. Freshman point guard Mike Gesell, who scored a season-high 19 points for Iowa on Tuesday, was held to two points and committed three turnovers without an assist.
Iowa was 7-for-8 from 3-point range in the first half but finished 8-for-15 and shot 26.1 percent (12-for-46) overall. The Hawkeyes were 4-for-24 from the field in the second half.
The Shockers used a 12-0 run early in the second half to open a 46-37 lead and never trailed again.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Shockers won their first in-season tournament title since the 1998-99 Cessna Classic and their first away from home since the 1963-64 All-College Tournament in Oklahoma City. … The Shockers got 40 points from their bench in both games in Cancun. … Wichita State leads the all-time series 5-4.
