No. 20 Mississippi State beat Tennessee for the first time in its last seven tries Thursday, stifling the Volunteers for a 62-58 home win.
Renaldo Woolridge’s 3-pointer cut Mississippi State’s lead to 60-58 with 44 seconds left. But after a Bulldogs’ turnover, Dee Bost stole the ball from Trae Golden and jammed for the final margin.
The Bulldogs (14-3, 1-1 SEC) closed the first half on a 15-5 run to lead 36-27 at the break. Freshman guard Deville Smith, getting extensive minutes due to Bost’s foul trouble, sparked Mississippi State with four first-half assists.
Junior forwards Arnett Moultrie and Renardo Sidney dominated the paint, combining for 26 points and 11 rebounds. Moultrie blocked three shots.
Golden, a sophomore guard, buried 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and led the Volunteers (8-8, 1-1 SEC) with 20 points. Tennessee committed 14 turnovers and had nine shots blocked by the taller Bulldogs.
