Ryne Smith scored a career-high 26 points, including eight 3-pointers, and Purdue survived a potential game-winning 3-point try to hold off High Point 67-65 in West Lafayette, Ind. Monday night.
Trailing 62-60 with 2:07 remaining, the Boilermakers took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by senior All-American candidate Robbie Hummel. Purdue (2-0) led 67-62 before Shay Shine connected on a trey with 15 seconds remaining to trim the deficit to 67-65.
After Hummel missed a pair of free throws, High Point (1-1) came down and went for the win but Nick Barbour's long three-point attempt from beyond the top of the key missed with 3 seconds remaining. Purdue claimed its 18th straight home win at Mackey Arena.
Smith, a senior guard, was 9 of 16 from the field, including a career-best 8 of 15 from three-point range. The Boilermakers, however, shot 6 of 19 from the free throw line, the worst effort by a Matt Painter-coached team.
Hummel added 18 points in his second game back from two torn ACL operations.
High Point was led by Barbour's 17 points and Shine's 14, all coming in the second half.
